A vibrant and flavorful Szechuan Tofu dish, combining crispy tofu with a spicy and sweet sauce for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon tamari (or soy sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon Szechuan peppercorns (optional)
  • Chili flakes to taste
  • Green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture and cut into cubes.
  2. Coat the tofu cubes in cornstarch until evenly covered.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Fry the tofu until crispy and golden on all sides, then remove from the pan.
  4. Add sliced bell pepper to the same pan and sauté for a couple of minutes.
  5. Mix together tamari, maple syrup, Chinese five spice, and chili flakes in a small bowl. Pour this sauce into the pan with the peppers and stir.
  6. Add the crispy tofu back to the pan and gently toss to coat in the sauce.
  7. Serve hot and garnish with chopped green onions.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, use tamari instead of soy sauce. Adjust chili flakes for desired spice level.
