Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (more if needed)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup heavy cream for ganache

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and let cool completely on wire racks.
  6. Beat together softened butter and peanut butter until smooth for the peanut butter buttercream. Gradually add powdered sugar and heavy cream until you reach your desired consistency.
  7. Place one chocolate cake layer on a serving plate, spread peanut butter buttercream over the top, and place the second layer on top.
  8. Heat heavy cream until just boiling for the chocolate ganache, then pour over chocolate chips. Let sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth.
  9. Pour chocolate ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
  10. Decorate with additional peanut butter buttercream, if desired, and serve.
