  • 2 cups sourdough starter
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup grated aged gouda cheese
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat and add the sliced onions.
  2. Cook slowly until caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. Add sugar and stir until combined. Remove from heat and let cool.
  3. Mix the sourdough starter, warm water, and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Gradually add the flour to form a dough.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
  6. Add the cooled caramelized onions and grated gouda, mixing until incorporated.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled, about 240-360 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  9. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased bread pan.
  10. Let it rest for 30 minutes.
  11. Score the top of the dough and bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  12. Allow to cool before slicing and enjoy!
