A delicious and hearty breakfast casserole inspired by the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, perfect for brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup diced ham
  • 1 cup diced turkey
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. Layer half of the bread slices in the bottom of the dish.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, salt, and pepper.
  5. Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread.
  6. Add the diced ham and turkey, then sprinkle with Swiss cheese.
  7. Layer the remaining bread slices on top.
  8. Pour the remaining egg mixture over the top.
  9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  10. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and set.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, add a layer of jam or preserves between the bread layers.
  • This casserole can be prepared a day in advance for convenience.
  • Feel free to substitute the meats with your favorites or add vegetables.
