A delightful gluten-free dessert featuring tart apples and a rich, creamy custard that evokes warmth and nostalgia.

Ingredients

  • 4 large, tart apples (like Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Arrange the sliced apples in an even layer in the greased dish.
  4. Sprinkle the apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  5. Whisk together the eggs, sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla extract in a bowl.
  6. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt to the egg mixture.
  7. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the apples.
  8. Dot the top with little pieces of butter.
  9. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until the custard is set and lightly golden.
  10. Cool slightly before serving to allow flavors to meld.
