Delicious chocolate espresso rolls that combine rich flavors of chocolate and espresso in a soft, sweet dough.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp espresso powder
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ½ cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk (or heavy cream)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp espresso powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk and granulated sugar in a mixing bowl. Sprinkle in the active dry yeast and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Beat in the eggs and softened unsalted butter.
  3. Whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt in another bowl.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour until doubled in size.
  7. Mix brown sugar, cocoa powder, and espresso powder for the filling in a bowl.
  8. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle (about ¼ inch thick). Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the filling evenly across the surface.
  9. Roll the dough tightly from the long side, and cut it into 12 equally-sized rolls.
  10. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Whisk together powdered sugar, milk (or cream), vanilla extract, and optional espresso powder in a bowl until smooth while the rolls are baking.
  13. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls and let it set for a few minutes before serving.
